Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to Wasteland (released in 1988)—the very first post-apocalyptic computer RPG, which inspired the creators of the legendary Fallout series. Before Wasteland, no other CRPG allowed players to control individual party members for tactical purposes or make significant decisions that would alter the game world. Wasteland was the first game to feature a non-linear approach to problem-solving, filled with choices and consequences; it abandoned the traditional "single-solution" approach found in other games, empowering players to solve problems in whatever way they preferred.
