The Sky Above Us
Returning from a colleague’s funeral, a journalist meets an unusual fellow traveler on the train—a former priest who voluntarily left the ministry following tragic events at a penal colony. It is a long journey to Moscow, and the stranger decides to share the story of the experience that changed him forever.
He had once come to the prison chapel worn down by poverty, family turmoil, and doubts about his own faith. Yet, it was behind the barbed wire that he encountered a man whose views on good and evil seemed the exact opposite of Christian teachings: an inmate named Chaplygin, who was convinced that cruelty is natural and that might makes right. Their encounters gradually became a trial for both of them.
*The Sky Above Us* is a novella about faith and disbelief, human cruelty, and the capacity for change; it explores what happens to a person when familiar answers no longer suffice and the choice between good and evil must be made not in the abstract, but in the face of another’s suffering. At the heart of the story are two very different men, each of whom unexpectedly becomes a moral mirror for the other.
