The presence of an unshared pair of electrons in a molecule is designated as B*. In the case of a trigonal bipyramid (sp3d hybridization), the unshared pairs of electrons are located in the equatorial plane, while in an octahedron (sp3d2 hybridization), they are in axial positions.
