- Because today Jimmy's mother arrived in his new Cadillac, and they went to his home on the coast for the weekend. Jimmy took three of his friends, and me and Mike are not invited. We were told that not invited because we are "poor children."
- So you say? - I asked incredulously father.
- Yeah, and said - I said a painful tone. Father shook his head silently, pulled glasses on his nose and went back to reading the newspaper. And I stood there, waiting for an answer.
It was 1956. I was 9 years old.
