In April 1970, Guatemala was kidnapped by a group of armed men the German ambassador Karl von Shpreti. The kidnappers presented an ultimatum: if the authorities did not release 22 political prisoners, they will kill the West German ambassador. The Guatemalan government refused to meet this demand, and as a result the German ambassador was found dead not far from the Guatemalan capital.
